I agree Applied Materials and the SOX are the indicators.

I'd look at the SOX for an intermediate comparison and AMAT for a day-to-day move. Lately CYMER has drifted lower while AMAT has held gound fairly well, this is unusual and I've been expecting CYMER to move up a little lately. I believe this is tax-loss selling and lack of attention from short-term traders.

Cymer doesn't get the same attention as AMAT, natually, so when the market looks ugly the short-term trades don't want to get involved. AMAT on the other hand is being accumulated by value funds, thus holding it's ground etc..

When AMAT turns positive and the negative news dies down a little, the little short-term traders feels more comfortable and takes a stab at CYMER.
