After several rapes and many burglaries in Northern Virginia I was told the same I was told the same by the head of the police department. Women were scared----I had a child to protect-----when my husband traveled That's when I took lessons And, a Neighborhood Watch was formed---unpaid unlike Mr. O's paid work in Chicago as a 'community organizer. And, took the dog back to dog training. Dogs are great protectors with small children Just get the right kind. Ours was mid size Snauzer, very protective. Burglar alarms are good------but only if there is a good connection to an alarm company. Some areas may not have such. Now I would recommend being sure you have a cell phone and maybe phone with you when going to bed or taking a nap. In our area a fringe benefit was neighbors getting to know lived next door. Unfortunately, the recent incident-----the couple who killed the people -------proved to not be friendly neighbors.
