The different viewpoints of developers and users continues to be a sticking point here. Developers want software that is elegant, efficient, modular, robust, etc etc. These are noble aims, and developers are conditioned to expect these things from high-end systems. Such software tends to be very expensive.

The vast majority of current and potential users are totally nontechnical. They want software that does neat and useful things without the steep learning curve. And they don't want to pay much for it.

Users tend to tolerate bugs, bloat, and breakdowns because they are still thrilled to be able to do things that they couldn't even imagine ten years ago. Call us dumb and happy.

Did MSFT create this revolution? No, but they have very effectively exploited it. Does better software exist? Unquestionably. Does it cost a lot more? Dunno. (I recall flirting with going to OS/2 a few years ago; I looked at a demo and did some research, and decided I couldn't justify it).

BTW-- the contention is that MSFT does not give us a choice. Well, I continue to use NCSP (which I think is fine) at work because our IS group will not allow me to install IE 4.0 because of "unsolved security problems." I cannot "choose" to use IE 4.0! Some monopoly!
