We as individuals are in the eyes of the IRS are on a cost basis for everything. Its what you paid for it. If you bought 100 at 10 and it has split several time and you now own 1000 then you cost per share for taxe purposes would be $1per share.

Generally the MARKET VALUE at the time of a split has NO MEANING for tax purposes.
.
The basic rule is your original cost, as adjusted by the split, among all shares held at the time of the split.
