When my computers are infected, I always do an image restore rather than trying to remove the problem piecemeal.

After some thought, I decided that doing hundreds of windows updates probably also has negative consequences for system performance, similar to doing an upgrade verses doing a clean install...

It may not be dramatic, but it's subtle.
