Does unplugging the mouse and plugging it back in have any effect?

Also, if it's a USB mouse, you could try a different USB port when you reconnect it.

Unfortunately though, all operating systems are so complex today, that they invariably have bugs.

I mentioned the other day about Windows updates and the mandatory restart making my mouse inoperable. I just made a discovery about that. I got an update yesterday afternoon and installed it. Rather than going with a restart right then I decided to ignore it since it was close to the time for me to shut down for the day. When I did the usual cold start this morning, my mouse was perfectly normal. Apparently, there is some sort of bug associated with a warm start as opposed to a cold start. All this FWIW if anyone else is experiencing this problem.
