MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 23, 1997--Trident Microsystems Inc. (NASDAQ:TRID) announced today that primarily due to the Asian financial crisis, second quarter revenues would be significantly under expectations.

As a result, revenues would be down by 30-35% as compared to the first quarter, and result in a loss for the quarter. Detailed results for the second quarter will be available on January 22.

"Recent financial turmoil, beginning with Southeast Asia and now Japan and Korea, have led some of our customers to experience financial difficulties and buying patterns have become uncharacteristically conservative. There have been delays in the introduction and acceptance of some of our new 3D products in the region," stated Frank Lin, president and CEO.

"Additionally in the portable segment, our major notebook OEMs have experienced slow demand for their products, which negatively impacted our sales in the quarter. In the desktop segment, pricing pressure also became competitive towards the end of the quarter."

Going Forward

The Company continues to focus on its key initiatives, which include the following new product families:

-- multimedia audio products such as the 9753WAVE and 4D-WAVE;

-- graphics products with embedded memory beginning with the Cyber9388 and the Cyber9520.

"Looking forward, we feel confident in our full spectrum of
multimedia technologies, including AGP, 3D, DVD, embedded memory and
audio, and our solid financial position. We truly believe that the
trends towards more affordable and high-integration multimedia
systems play well to our corporate strengths in both the desktop and
portable markets," Lin concluded.

As previously planned, Trident's corporate headquarters will be shut down from Dec. 24, 1997, through Jan. 2, 1998.

Forward-Looking Information

The forward-looking statements above are subject to certain risks, and actual results could vary materially depending on a number of factors. These risks include, in particular, trends in the PC industry, the results of Trident's sales and shipment activities toward the end of the quarter, Trident's ability to timely introduce new products, Trident's success in implementing planned initiatives, the occurrence of design wins among major OEMs for Trident products, and competitive pressures, including pricing and competitors' new product introductions. Additional factors that may affect the Company's business are described in detail in the Company's filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
