I guess North Texas IS very very different!!! Your stories make me think of that great scene in Field of Dreams where Costner's wife takes on the school board as they try to ban books. Someone tried to ban a book here two years ago, and it tore the community apart for a while, but a compromise was reached. The paper interviewed CW and he was very outspoken in decrying censorship of any type. I should tell you though, that I asked him yesterday if it would offend him to hear religious music in school (he's an avowed atheist at this time) and he said that he saw no reason to be offended, that the majority of Americans claim to be Christian so it's bound to be everywhere. But Del, you and CGB are arguing in French and I'm speaking German. My only real point is that musically we are cutting off our children's noses and I don't think that's prudent; I thought it was a rather extreme position that CGB took saying that until all the children admitted that they were really celebrating the end of winter and not Christ's birth, then doggone it, we shouldn't allow anything. Like it or not, 85% of Americans claim to be Christian, and whether the dates are accurate or not has nothing to do with what they are celebrating. Respect and acceptance are the only answers and no one, on either side, seems willing to give that. (In answer to your question, I suppose the fact that I'm a pretty classically oriented musician has something to do with my opinions. I studied piano and organ for 12 years, voice (including opera)for eight years, and have taught piano on and off forever. Sang my way through undergrad with two guys a la Peter, Paul and Mary and did some back-up vocal work for bands. Did my grad. work at UVa in theatre, (mostly musical theatre)but never finished. I still sing in area churches. Now you know my musical life history!)
