WHY THE EUROPEAN MONETARY UNION MAY BE DOOMED

Just in case you have not yet visited Barrons this week, go to
barrons.com, click on 'This Weeks's Barrons' and read the last portion of Kathryn's Welling's

Playing Bubbles & An Interview with Albert Edwards

I had wanted to copy the report, but it does not lend itself for copying to be done.

From the look of things, even though it does seem that EMU may take off on schedule, it is likely to crash soon thereafter.

Despite efforts have been made to contain the SE- and NE-Asian contagion to effect market stability worldwide, there is no guarantee that all hell may not break loose again later on.

XAU'ers ever heard o'this one? XAU "MAGIC MULTIPLE FIVE": The XAU=weighted index of large-cap gold mining shrs, with management
primarily based in Canada and the U.S. There is a historical correlation between the behavior of the XAU as it approaches or crosses any multiple of five, and the short-term future
performance of the XAU.

The most bullish behavior is if the XAU begins the day above a
multiple of five, goes below a multiple of five during the day (particularly if the intraday low is the lowest level in several weeks or more), then closes the day with a gain.

The most bearish behavior is the exact opposite.

On Monday, December 29, 1997, the XAU touched an early morning top of 74.31, then fell to an early afternoon bottom of 72.11 before closing down 3.15% at 72.22

Since no key level was approached, this is NEUTRAL.
