Sun and Merced

The reason is that SUNW knows that Merced will offer unbeatable price/performance thanks to INTC's huge volumes. They really have no choice in the matter. Merced will absolutely dominate early 21st century computing. Sparc and everything else will be relegated to niche status.

The reasoning for Sun to get on the PC platform seems straight forward.
1 The cost advantage of mass production for the PC is insermountable.

2 The Pentium already out performs Sun's own processor at most important tasks and the Merced will be over kill. Sun can't compete and will be well served by selling its hardware business ASAP.

3 Presence on the PC platform will allow Sun to sell Solaris (sp?) on the same hardware as Windows NT - Solaris will be sold as a replacement OS that is Java centric.

4 Sun is also driven by CPQ's deal with Santa Cruz Operations unix.
