Religion has LONG been one of the criteria used to admit or deny admittance to foreign persons seeking to enter the US.....its part of the federal law.....

Immigration and Nationality Act ( section 101(a)(42)): "An alien applying for admission must establish that … religion [among other things] … was or will be at least one central reason for persecuting the applicant."


In some particular cases, the State Department designates certain groups as ones of "special humanitarian concern" and in the past, religion has helped define such groups. Examples include Soviet Jews and Iranian religious minorities.
