To recap: For obvious reasons, I'm a big supporter of free speech and democracy, and typically it's artists who exemplify this in heavily censored militaristic countries. Recall back in 2013 I posted about an all-girl band from Myanmar I was sponsoring, and for whom I eventually got a US (Hollywood) recording contract-- the first such ever. A few years later, I sponsored a semi punk rock band to play at the SXSW festival in Austin, again a first for that country. Happily, four of the five members of the girl band are now big stars with solo careers, but the youngest is without question the country's most popular female artist with 2.6M followers on Facebook (which is probably most of the young people in that country who have access to the net). It seems every other day she's in a fashion shoot, commercial (e.g. Coke), headlining a concert, etc. over there. In the spirit of paying it forward, one of her advertising sponsors just held a contest where the winner got a free trip to Hollywood. So cool. Here's the contest video followed by one of her recent hit songs, which just happens to be in English. After that, which I couldn't resist, is a cute video of a little girl singing along to this song in English even though I'm sure she can't speak or understand the language. After that is a video she did for a condom company, seriously. As for the lead singer of the semi-punk band, who used to work in a small stall in a mall selling custom suits, he is now the head of an NGO called Turning Tables that sponsors other up-and-coming artists-- also paying it forward.
