Suretrade is $7.95, check out the suretrade thread, this is a newer one. My guess is that etrade being the most heavily known of the first wave online brokerages needs to be bought by someone as they are past the peak of the growth curve. Suretrade and others probably represent the beginnings of the next wave. The end of the year is a good time to switch brokerages. The next wave will be CyberTrader, they won't have their internet beta available until March. With another wave coming and being in need of a buyout, first wave online brokerages probably aren't able to upgrade their systems. It's always easier to begin fresh with new technology.
