Art,

Fines are mentioned here ... Looks like they are still negotiating.

Dealers propose new trading system for Nasdaq

sjmercury.com

<< About 30 brokerages, including many Wall Street giants, currently are negotiating a $900 million settlement with investors in a class-action lawsuit alleging the firms rigged prices on Nasdaq to inflate their profits. It would be the biggest civil antitrust settlement ever, according to legal experts. >>

bloomberg.com has a detailed story. They don't seem to archive articles so this URL may be pointing to something else soon.

The SEC fines - I saw it all over the news (which in St. THomas solely consists of CNNFN and Bloomberg) that the nasd fines firms 900 millions for price fixing and other otc violations. ALl the big players, like GSCO, MLCO, etc (but let me say that It wasn't all of them ) had fines of like 75 million, 80 million. Some of the smaller firms had smaller fines. I would think that you might find it somewhere on the nasd's or sec's site. Perhaps some thread on here has it. Other than that, I can check Dow Jones and Reuter's when I get back.

2. Great stuff today! We scooted down the road about 2 miles to one of the really nice hotels to play some basketball, 6 of us. We get there expecting to play 3 on 3. Anyway, if you have been reading the news, President Clinton is visiting St. Thomas this week (he did the same thing last year and I actually wish he'd go somewhere else...he clogs up a small island like this). Anyway, on the court are 8 big, tall pretty athletic guys, different looks, different looking nationalities..The Secret Service...we no slouched, all ex-college players, anyway we challenge them to a full court game, them vs. us. Anyway, we had them for almost the entire game....We were actually up 13 to 9, game to 15. You have never seen a more serious bunch of guys. Anyway, in 90degree heat, with only 1 sub, we choked, totally blew it! Their point guard, a guy about 6'2, 210" lights up a three and proceeds to dunk the ball for the win over my brother-in-law, an individual who dreams to simply touch the rim. Man! I was so pissed, like being up 1/2 point on some stock and trying to hit the bid but missing it and ending up scratching..........
Well, how often can you say you played the secret service, down to protect the president, in full court basketball....clearly there is no way you can lie and say you won when in fact you did not..i mean afterall, like him or not, they put their lives on the line for our president..

Anyway, thought you would enjoy it! I hope everyone had a great week. I will be back on Monday! Happy Holidays to everyone!

The market is still pretty bearish yet it feels like we might move sideways with some accumulation for a period. Time frames have to change. Gone are the times of buying some 20 stock with the anticipation of selling it for 25 in a number of weeks. It is time to go back to more realistic expectations for investments. As for trading, the volatility seems to be easing a bit yet it is still easier to make money in an up market than a down one...unless you are short.
