It depends on the complexity of the sub-systems, but I will make large generalizations.

Launch is done in phases. First the sats are placed in their proper positions. Then they are "turned on" for that all important first communication with the ground controllers. Depending on the design, the critical systems are checked to ensure that they are operating properly. This should take about 24 hours.

Then, the sat is stabilized, unfolded and oriented properly (if this was not automatically done during placement into the orbit).
Next, a very detailed "inspection" is initiated to ensure the sats health and proper orbit. As everything checks out, the sat will slowly be brought to complete operational status (one sub-system at a time). This phase will take 90 days or so.

Imagine breaking in a new car. You want to ensure everything works properly before you red-line it at the race track. Hope this helps.
