Hi Paul, Article...Intel readies its 440LXR chip set, Micro ATX boards... December 24, 1997 Electronic Buyers' News via Individual Inc. : Taipei, Taiwan- Intel Corp. is quietly pushing yet another PC chip-set line and motherboard architecture, this time for use in the emerging sub-$1,000 PC market. By mid-1998, Intel plans to roll out its so-called 440LXR chip-set line and Micro ATX motherboards designed to work in conjunction with the company's upcoming family of stripped-down Pentium II processors, according to sources in Taiwan. At a press event held in Taipei last week, however, Ronald Smith, vice president and general manager of Intel's Computing Enhancement Group, said the company does not comment on unannounced products. After feeling the heat from its X86-based chip rivals in the low-cost PC market - namely Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Cyrix Corp. - the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company last month outlined a strategy to attack this sector by pushing a Pentium II chip without L2 cache. This stripped-down Pentium II chip family, which will be rolled out in the third quarter of 1998, includes a line of 266-MHz and 300-MHz processors. To help propel those efforts into the sub-$1,000-PC market, Intel will roll out the 440LXR chip set, a stripped-down version of its current 440LX product designed for full-blown Pentium II systems, local sources said. The 440LXR, in which the "R" stands for "restricted," supports Intel's emerging AGP and SDRAMs. But unlike the 440LX, the 440LXR does not support dual- processor systems or other high-end features, the sources said. At the same time, Intel will show its Micro ATX-board form factor, which is a low-cost version of the company's current ATX motherboard architecture. However, it does not appear that the Micro ATX and ATX form factors are compatible, which means third-party board makers will have to develop and design a new family of boards to support the stripped-down Pentium II chip. _____________________________________________________________________ Have a great Holiday's, Michael
