DVD Forum to Set 2nd-Generation Specs December 24, 1997 (TOKYO) -- The DVD Forum, an international standards organization, said that in 1998 it will establish the next-generation DVD-RAM, which can record 4.7GB of information on a single-sided disk. The DVD Forum is now collecting specifications proposals from DVD manufacturers, and plans to establish Version 1.9 in June 1998 after compatibility tests based on the proposals are completed. The official Version 2.0 will be established in September 1998. Standardized products are expected to be marketed in 1999, if the standardization proceeds as planned. Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. will market the first-generation DVD-RAM in January 1998. It can record 2.6GB on single-sided media. The DVD-ROM for delivery and replay of digital contents and programs can record 4.7GB on a single side. The first-generation DVD-RAM is not easy to use for data editing for DVD-ROMs because of its lower capacity, experts said. Hitachi Ltd. already developed the basic technologies that enable recording of 4.7GB on a single-sided disk. Hitachi has adopted a method that can raise the recording density without changing the basic disk structure of the first-generation product. The company plans to propose this method to the forum. The proposed specifications from the manufacturers will be accepted until the end of 1997, and the submitted proposals will be examined by a working group of DVD Forum. The DVD Forum will continue standardization efforts on the DVD-RAM, which will quadruple the recording density in a three-year time period. (Nikkei Personal Computing) japanbiztech.com
