Dave,

No one know precisely what the magnitute is even though everyone, I surmise, wants to know. We are all human and we all have our own motives, big or small, and we all want the world pan out to our own view about how it should.

Since the crisis in Asia is still unfolding, anyone's guess is almost as good as anyone else's. It might be more informative if these 'analysts' disclosed their views about the US several years ago when many of our banks were also tetering on default. Once we know the degree of their optimism/pessimism then, we can establish to some degree their biases in their current views of the Asian crisis.

If the US panned out the way the pessimistic camp projected then, we would be in no position to help anyone today. The US is a huge ship. It moves slowly even on its own problems. Witness our fiscal deficit. Be patient with us. Past successes do not guarantee future results, but if they indicate anything, most of us are hopeful that things will be settled with positive outcomes.
