Interesting adventure. My grand parents also left as young marrieds from Moldova a couple years earlier. I do not know the details of the journey, other than they headed west... And did not have much in the way of means... But wound up in Philadelphia after passing through Ellis Island. The Tzars conscription practices and required leingth of stay in the army as well as the treatment of minorities in Russia were all factors in their decision... Which turned out in retrospect to be a good one.

My my take-aways from your story are as below: - fear is a survival trait - panic is rational - best to panic early - peninsula hotel is a good way-point from which to seek refuge before getting underway - disguise can greatly help - gold can help but not if positioned in the wrong geography - food more important than gold at certain junctures - when underway, just move, fast, in the away direction, and be quiet
