There is really nothing new in there; we know that demographics of the Baby Boom are a significant part of the problem, and that is one that was seem coming for years. The other half (or 40% according to Obama) was not foreseen and is a result of lousy economic policy.

If you think that makes it okay, you need to keep in mind how many people we're talking about in that 40% of the increase.

But the most important point is this: No matter what the numbers are, unproductive people are a drag on the economy. You can have robust economic growth when a large segment of the population is not producing (that is working in private sector jobs). And that is the problem. The economy is terribly stagnated, we should be in a maximum-growth position right now and we're just barely keeping our heads above water.
