I received another subscription offering in the mail last night. This one is from Louis Rukeyser. I watch Wall Street Week every Friday night and I enjoy his commentary and the panel of analysts that are on every week. I'm considering this subscription. One thing it says is "The best time to start is immediately" referring to timing the market. He says " It's time not timing that is going to make you rich." Lesson: You're the unluckiest investor in the world.(Feels like it) In 1963, you put $2K in the S&P500 Index once a year for 10 years and you invest at the exact top of the market each year. As of Nov 1 1997, your total of $20K grows to $587K. You quit investing in 1973. Your brother-in-law (lucky bastard) invests $2K every year starting in 1973 and picks the bottom every year to invest in. He puts money in every year for 20 years. His $40K grows to $568K by Nov 1 1997. You started 10 years earlier and picked the tops of the market, He puts in double the money, has a higher annual return, but you have more money. Get started now. The lesson I have learned so far is 4 years in the market and I was only above break even for a month in August this year (finally) from that starting point 4 years ago, 96 and 97 have been positive years but starting earlier hasn't helped me.
