Keep in mind a lot of Baby boomers are not retiring as expected too. Some of the shortages are emerging later that anticipated. A lot can not retire because of a fundamental re-structuring of the economy. A few still have the defined benefit pensions promised. Most do not. That leaves a lot of the millenials out in the cold temporarily. Most of them are staying in school longer. I know a resident that is having to bring his own funding to complete his specialty -essentially working for free hoping a spot in a Canadian hospital opens up. Lot of doctors protecting their own turf. So much for being able to compete.
