Did anyone see the Ed Bradley Special Report last night on CBS about a toxic waste dump site near Grand Bois, Louisiana? It was on at 10:00 PM EST and dealt with massive dumping of oil well wastes into a dump site that was causing detrimental effects on nearby residents. It was asserted that oil company lobbyists many years ago got congress to pass a law stating that none of their oil well wastes were to be considered "toxic" despite the presence of such contaminants and known carcinogens as benzine and hydrogen sulfide. The local residents have hired an attorney and have thus far fought an uphill, losing battle against the oil companies and an unsympathetic legislature to close down the nearby dump site. Now this was an open pit type operation.

I was wondering that if enough of an uproar was created by this kind of publicity, perhaps oil well wastes might also have to be disposed of more "cleanly" down Envirotec type wells rather than in open pits with their obvious environmental hazards.

Anyone have any thoughts about this? Sounds like we may have stumbled on to an emerging growth industry.
