The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 49% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Obama's job performance. Fifty percent (50%) disapprove (see trends).

The latest figures include 26% who Strongly Approve of the way Obama is performing as president and 40% who Strongly Disapprove. This gives him a Presidential Approval Index rating of -14.

Voters want Obama and the Republican-led Congress to work together, and they're far more likely to blame Congress than the president for preventing that from happening.

Seventy-nine percent (79%) think it is more important for Congress and the president to work together to achieve what’s best for the country rather than to stand for what they believe in.

But Obama yesterday enacted several limited gun control initiatives through executive order because he knows Congress won’t approve them. This is where voters stand on gun control these days.

For the third week in a row, just 26% of voters think the country is heading in the right direction.

Americans are more disappointed with last year than they expected to be but are more confident about 2016.

However, most are not starting the year with a New Year’s resolution.

Some readers wonder how we come up with our job approval ratings for the president since they often don’t show as dramatic a change as some other pollsters do. It depends on how you ask the question and whom you ask.

To get a sense of longer-term job approval trends for the president, Rasmussen Reports compiles our tracking data on a full month-by-month basis.

Rasmussen Reports has been a pioneer in the use of automated telephone polling techniques, but many other firms still utilize their own operator-assisted technology (see methodology).
