That’s what one woman is claiming in a new $100 million lawsuit. But while this isn’t the first time Trump has been accused of rape , Trump is claiming the reports are “categorically false” and “politically motivated,” all while the media asks questions about the merits of the accuser herself. In the massive $100 million lawsuit filed in California, one Katie Johnson alleges that Trump, along with convicted Florida sex offender and sexual abuse ring-leader Jeffery Epstein , participated in gruesomely-detailed acts of rape over the course of several months in 1994, when Johnson was just 13 years old. Trump took a firmly defensive stance against the allegations last week. In a statement issued to celebrity gossip tabloid RadarOnline , the 2016 presidential hopeful flatly denied that Johnson’s allegations hold any merit:“The allegations are not only categorically false, but disgusting at the highest level and clearly framed to solicit media attention or, perhaps, are simply politically motivated. There is absolutely no merit to these allegations. Period.” At face-value, some will surely argue that Trump is likely innocent of those charges. After all, Katie Johnson gave a disconnected phone number in her pro se lawsuit, and listed as her address a home which neighbors claim is under foreclosure and has been unoccupied for months. Johnson also claims she’s unemployed, with just $276 to her name. If you’re the sort of person who blames victims for crimes against them and automatically assumes women are making such allegations up out of thin air — first off, you’re a sexist, ignorant douchebag, but also — this story probably sounds like it carries all of the hallmarks of a woman out for money, media attention, or something else. It’s pretty common for women to be viewed skeptically when alleging sexual assault, which is partly why so few victims of sexual assault ever come forward. And anyone who is making such a huge accusation as child rape against one of the most famous figures in contemporary America is surely aware of the massive media firestorm such a story might erupt, especially if a court takes her allegations seriously. Is it possible that Johnson is just making up this story? Of course. But it’s equally possible that Johnson provided the address in foreclosure and disconnected phone number in an attempt to protect her own identity as much as possible, not just from Trump’s violent army of thug supporters , but from the oftentimes negligent scandal-crazed media, who would surely harass Johnson to no end and turn every aspect of her life, past and present, into tabloid fodder, all in an effort to land the “scoop” that discredits her story. Why would Ms. Johnson come forward with these allegations now? Why not earlier? That’s something else that Trump’s defenders will surely see as a mark against the woman accusing him of this heinous crime. But again, coming forward about sexual assault isn’t as easy as some people seem to think it is. Perhaps Katie Johnson couldn’t bottle it in any longer. Maybe she’s struggling emotionally with the fact that while she’s enduring apparent hardships, a horrible monster who took advantage of her as a child is ascending with terrifying velocity toward the Oval Office. It’s easy for the media to speculate against Katie Johnson. It’s easy to give Trump — a wealthy, well-connected presidential candidate and business tycoon — the benefit of the doubt. and yes, of course it’s possible that Johnson is making it all up, and doing it for the money and/ or the fame, or to dash Trump’s presidential aspirations, or some combination thereof. That’s the easy thing to do. But giving this woman your respect and actually considering all of the facts of the story, not just those that are convenient to your pre-conceived notions? Giving her the benefit of the doubt? That’s the right thing to do.
