Won't Intel's new Merced chip, Microsoft's incoming release of Window 98, and the continued growth of internet drive up chip demand, as more memory and faster chips are needed? Is it going to be a new product cycle in 1998-1999?

I hope the Korean chip makers go bankrupted so the excessive supply side is eliminated.

Scott, Yes, your point cuts to the heart of the question. The answer is another question. How long will there be demand for 16 Mg DRAM? Your point is also discussed by an analyst from ING Barings on the Semi Business News web site (techweb.cmp.com I believe) in a 12-24-97 article. Over the years I have usually found Barings (an old British investment bank based in Hong Kong) to provide very thoughtful macro analysis. He also raises the point I made earlier about the Taiwanese coming in to gain market share. It will make for a good year with the semi equip makers I believe, once the fog begins to lift on what's happening.
