Chuca, thanks for the references. Fascinating reading. Interestingly, the map accompanying the NY Times article showed the new claim sites not to be in the immediate vicinity of Lihir Island, but rather to the south of New Ireland Island. As the crow flies, the two sites would be roughly 30 and 90 miles, respectively, southwest and west of Lihir, each path crossing New Ireland on its way. What seems to be new here is the granting of two titles on Nov 28 to a total of 1974 sq miles of the Bismarck Sea in territorial waters. The original discoveries were made in 1991 and 93 by Dr. Binns of an Australian research organization, and By Dr. Steven Scott of the U. of Toronto.
These waters are much calmer than the open Pacific. There is real enthusiasm expessed by all those interviewed, but when was that ever not the case with new gold finds.
