Epicure I know exactly what you're saying. My primary point, was addressing specific evil things the church has done and gotten away with because we are not allowed to talk about it. See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. Although it is an interesting question that cautious optimist raises as to what do they teach a person whose getting a doctorate in theology? For example, think of all the pedophiles that the Catholic Church swept under the rug and even rescued by recalling them to the Vatican where they could safely hide behind Vatican walls. Think of how much damage all the major religions do to the gays by their position dehumanizing them and telling them they are engage in evil behavior. That has taken a tremendous psychological toll on the gay community. And the religions are blatantly guilty, and they need to be held accountable for their behavior. But the way religions have it set up is that we're not allowed to discuss it. We're not allowed to bring it up. This is not the time or place. Where is the correct time or place? That is all that I was getting at. The intimidation religions use to keep people quiet when they raise legitimate questions about church behavior. Of course it's worse in the Middle East, there it's still a penalty of death for apostasy. My ancient Greek philosophy professor was one smart guy. And he made it clear, that the reason the Greeks were able to rise to the intellectual heights they did so quickly was that they did not have to fight monolithic religion trying to still them.
