Mister Ed: Your information on Viagra's duration of action is incorrect. According to statements made public by Viagra's investigators, Viagra's effect will last for a minimum of 2+ hours. A 10 minute effect for Viagra is pharmacologically impossible. No oral drug can go through the body that quick.

Your "10 minute" duration was derived from a Viagra RigiScan analysis from a published study in a peer reviewed journal (Boolell et al, British Journal of Urology, 1996). This analysis actually confirmed Viagra's significant efficacy versus placebo in psychogenic patients. There was a 10 fold increase in relative duration.

The investigator in this study did not note any concern with Viagra's duration of action. In fact, the Viagra patients averaged daily 6.1 erections on a single tablet versus 1.3 on placebo. Commenting on the study, the investigator stated "the vast majority of men with erectile dysfunction would prefer an oral therapy to an injection therapy. Sildenafil has several other advantages over injection therapy--it only works during sexual stimulation and doesn't cause priapism or prolonged painful erections, which can be a complication of injection therapy." Note: MUSE was not approved at the time of the study.

RigiScan tests are done with visual stimulation in a laboratory setting and really can not be correlated with "real world" sexual activity. In a clinical study, the RigiScan duration is used as a comparative measure against placebo or to measure penile tumescence during sleep. In this study, it certainly was not meant to measure the duration of a Viagra... particularly since a single pill lasted long enough for an average of 6 erections per day.

Another interesting point is that the average "real world" sexual time is much shorter than everyone thinks. Research indicates the average total time is between 10-15 minutes from start to finish. Kinsey reported that the average time between penetration and ejaculation was only 2 1/2 minutes! Masters and Johnson updated this statistic to only 3 1/2 minutes. Moreover, most people feel that they spend much longer in a sexual activity than they actually do. Ultimately, all researchers concluded that quality and satisfaction are much more important than measuring the length of time for the sexual activity.

The fact is that Viagra's 2+ hour duration of action will be viewed as very positive by patients even if they attached to a RigidScan device reading Penthouse and recording the results in a diary.

Happy holidays!
