The Stand Your Ground Law was not used as a defense in the case because it was not applicable on the facts...it is specifically LIMITED to dwellings and occupied vehicles...the site of the attack on Zimmerman was neither a dwelling or an occupied vehicle.......

The Judge's instruction to the jury you posted is a statement of the elements of the FL common law right of self defense....Florida's “Stand Your Ground” law did not create a new type of defense in cases like Zimmerman's. The principle that a person may use deadly force in self-defense if he or she reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm has been the law in Florida for at least 100 years. In fact, its the law in most states....
