My knowledge is also at the novice level when it comes to ATM, however, I have come to understand this much - ATM has a standards body and definition behind it, unlike, Gigabit Ethernet which comes in vendor oriented flavors. Therefore, any technology with a standard supporting its development, has the added benefit that this will allow the market to figure out which vendor has done the best job developing products to meet the standard. Yurie's products have been recognized as "best in class" and they have just received a patent on sending the minimum number of packets (cells) to complete a data exchange under the ATM protocol. Let the best vendor win.

The products that make up the majority of the FORE product line are LAN ATM equipment. This is not to say that they do not support the WAN ATM equipment, as does YURI. The beauty of ATM is that it is incorporated in both the LAN/WAN arenas. This enables for a clean transition with no Analog/digital conversions or protocols translation. It gets pretty technical after that.. On the Gigabit Ethernet side, this is purely on the LAN side of the house. It does not cross over to the WAN, no ethernet does. There are preliminary standards that the IEEE will be ratifying early in '98. Companies ARE inter-operating......we test with other vendors on a daily basis!!! MJB
