"If you must forcast, forcast often."

I don't see a bear market in the US as long as the 30-year treasury yield keeps sliding down. That would change if the FED miscalculates and bumps up interest rates (they should be lowering them, and I think they will at least once in '98).

There are many overvalued stocks out there and I see many of them correcting as they miss numbers. The misses will be more frequent due to the Asia situation exacerbating disinflation. Deflation and significant bear markets require external causes. Asian situation alone can't do that, but a major political trend toward protectionism in US could. We saw a little of that this year when the administration mishandled the NAFTA expansion legislation. I believe that they will work with their Republican opponents to rectify this, but only after the elections.

The incredible engine of 401(k) funding will continue to flood the markets with new cash. This cash, once invested in equities, is much more likely to stay in stock mutual funds than most people think.

If the general market trends down for all or part of 1998, the biotech sector will probably disconnect, with the stock prices more tied to the fortunes of individual companies than any of the general trends.

Ligand is down in late 1997 despite all good and no bad news. It will rally early and reach the next tier for biotechs in the new year. I expect the next move up in Ligand to begin as soon as before New Years, and the stock will test or exceed it's all-time high during the move.

Merry Christmas from the oft-forcasting CYBERKEN!!

Chirodoc: Dr. J's failsafe chart says that when LGND
charts are at bottom (Dec. 24) and the stock declines
on that day but the warrants have an up-day (resulting
in significant increase in time premium) that it is
time to jump back in. I may be daffy but I don't see
lgnd prices under 11 and I don't see warrant prices
under 6, so no dollar cost averaging for me. I'm jumping
in for more! HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL- especially our
guru -the GADOL HADOR Henry Niman.
