CHRISTMAS DAY, 1997

As we gather around the tree this morning we can appreciate the many things
our times provide for us.

We can also be grateful that the corner has been turned in our long quest
for high-definition television.

There are now enough people engaged in resolving the difficult questions
which trouble the implantation. The receivers are underway from the
prototype shops and will be shown with fanfare at the Consumer Electronics
Show next month. The broadcasters are gearing up with appropriate
transmission equipment and program material. Even the illusive business
model is starting to take shape and money will be made as result of the
enhanced demand by the public for higher grade services. The government is
looking for new ways around old image problems at the EPA, the DoD, and
several other agencies are poised to add large HDTV equipment budgets for
the coming year and years.

In short, the period of doubt is being replaced with a deserved confidence.
Under your tree next year, and all years to follow, can be that large
screen HDTV set you have been working for. By this time next year programs
will fill the air to illuminate that set, along with a plethora of
ancillary data services to add interest and education to our lives.

So, we enter this hope filled season with a new view to the future-not one
clouded by dire prediction of doom and gloom, but rather a vibrant vision
that looks straight to the light of success and opportunity, decimating, as
it moves across humanity, the dark influence of inadequacy and failure.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a happy New Year.
