japan, unlike china, has no strategic depth in any sense of the concept, and needs to be an export nation china is a continental economy that essentially can be own universe and has no choice but be so china does not have a problem but an opportunity, to - build out infrastructure - connect w/ others outside of its continental universe - rebalance rich / poor, urban / rural, coastal / inland, state / private, services / production - further develop financial markets, switch-on taxation system, etc etc
