I checked the Seagate website and found that Seagate has changed some of their desktop models without much fuss (no announcements).

They have new 3.2, 5.1 GB and 6.5 GB drives spinning at 4500 rpm. These are 1.6 GB/platter drives, apparently Seagate is not skipping this areal density entirely. The 6.5 GB Medalist Pro (which was 5400 rpm) seems to have been phased out.

Their 5400 rpm family includes the previously announced 2.1 GB/platter drives (2.1, 4.3, 6.5 and 8.6 GB) plus a 2.5 GB model (1.3 GB/platter) formerly Medalist Pro).

Looks like Seagate is finally moving away from their ancient <= 1.0 GB/platter areal density models.

Hi Todd,
<Fujitsu - ?Anyone have any idea what they do?>

Fujitsu has their own internal development and pilot quantity capability with a priority relationship with a manufacturer in Japan called FDK. That priority includes a substantial ownership position, maybe even up to 100% though I do not know this for certain. I do believe that 100% of FDK's output goes to Fujitsu.

You are quite right that IBM supplies 100% of its internal head requirements.

Best,
Stitch
