MICROSOFT IS DOOMED!

Rod,

I don't disagree with you that Java has some attractive features (although we do disagree about how revolutionary they are); I don't disagree that it may someday become a popular language (although I don't believe it will happen overnight as you suggested it would a year ago); I don't disagree that Windows sucks (although NT 4 is an immensely improved product over any previous release, API notwithstanding).

But to declare Microsoft as "Doomed" is just plain ridiculous. They've gambled bigtime on the Java issue. But (1) they haven't lost yet, as the war isn't over, and (2) even if they DO lose, they have enough money to keep them from being "doomed" for many, many years to come.

It doesn't matter how good Sun's OS is, they're lightyears behind Windows NT where it counts -- in marketing the product to corporate America (and, for that matter, to home users, who are beginning to adopt NT in record numbers, and will continue to do so after W98 is thrust down their throats).

History is just not happening as quickly as you seem to think it is.
