Hi-
I have two very close friends who I trust implicitly who have programmers for years..I mean years. Both say the Year 2000 problem
is quite real. I have never read about the efficiency of the US
government. I have seen the efficiency of our banking
system..(they always seem to know they will be bailed out) Wonder how
they will be bailed out with the year2000 problem?
I have no idea about how many derivatives are out there. I have come
to learn though how this bull market in paper assets works..by the
seat of its pants. There was an article in the New York Times yesterday about the so called "productivity" gains because of technology..the opposite of stellar. The article didn't say
that low interest rates have helped most of our gigantic companies
good earnings. Watching for that article. Watching for an article
which will start tallying how much revenue will be generated by the
Internet growth..I am still quite amazed when I read the paper about
the government's battle with Microsoft and its connecting its browser
to its operating system..I find that to be one of the biggest jokes
of the nineties. Read that the backlog in WEBTV's is astounding.
OF course the government isn't paying attention to that one. Wow
I have to hand it to Bill Gates. The amount of advertising revenue
he is going to generate from that little 425 million purchase. He
probably thinks it is the best deal of his lifetime..better than when
IBM in its collosal blunder handed over the operating system it had
Microsoft develop for it (really impressive move by IBM whose leaders
totally missed the boat on PCs).
I watch Rubin's actions closely..More money to the bailout coming
from him. Things have to be quite terrifying. The financial industry I guess is definitely counting on these bailouts and are playing the market with that assumption.
Most people don't like to identify with the underdog..it
gets them scared about their own existence and fragility. Wow, how
much is the US giving to help bailout Korea and how much has Clinton
just purposed to give to the homeless.(on the latest round more to
Korea) I would still like to see the true statistics of how many
jobs here have been created by domestic companies versus the huge
comglomerates. I think in this last round, more money goes to Korea. I do believe that a society is as strong as its weakest link and as more safety nets are removed from this society, the more people will behave like threatened animals fighting for their own survival.
