Oil and metals, all commodities with plunging prices, are Russia's major exports.

By prohibiting most foreign imports Russia has prevented an even greater than 2/3 decline in the value of their currency.

Putin has also virtually eliminated the value of Social Security and healthcare coverage for Russia's elderly, leaving many elderly starving to death and quadrupling the suicide rate among the elderly.

Other commodity dependent economies like Canada should carefully consider Russia's results before making big moves.

Likewise Americans should consider the high suicide and starvation rate among the elderly in Russia before supporting Republican candidates like Bush, Rubio, Christie and Cruz who are demanding a Putin-style end to Medicare, and in Ted Cruz's case an end to Social Security payments as well.

Many think it sounds chic to dump Labor Force non-Participants like Bearcat Bob and his wife off their government Entitlement Programs, but it will have real consequences as they get older, as we're seeing in Russia.
