>I am using a GV 56kflex modem attached to my Mac Quadra 800. Every time I dial up my isp, I get the following message just prior to making the connection: "Connecting at an unknown rate" Has anyone experienced this problem on a Mac before. GV does not seem to know the cause.

Angier,

If you don't already have the latest version of the GV firmware for your modem, try downloading it from the GV site and installing it. I spent a long time troubleshooting a GV 56kFlex modem for a friend, and it turned out that the problem (we couldn't maintain a usable or sustainable connection with his ISP) was due to the fact that the firmware that shipped with the modem was v.516 (or so.) The current version of firmware is 1.2, and installing that fixed everything. By the way, GV has made updating firmware into a _very_ cool experience--they have an animated icon that shows skads of 1's and 0's being downloaded/shot into the flash memory.

(There is an AT command to check what version firmware you are using, but I didn't write that down when my ISP had me check it out. Regardless, I'd say the chances are high that you don't have a current version of the firmware, so this is probably a worthwhile thing and definitely a painless thing to do.)

Best regards, and happy holidays,

Jeff
