John, Here are the best ways to make mney in a tech stock. First you must assume a risk. Buy them when everyone else hates them but only if you understand why they are a bargain(undervalued), and ony if you beleive they have the prospects to suceed as some level... they don't necessarly have to dominate but their products have to have potential.
second put a stop lose under your buy.... Just in case you miss claculate. Three you must have patience lots of patince so if your buying for short term 8 out of ten times you'll probable loose money. If your buying for the intermediate term you will most likly loose money. You must be preparepared to buy for the long term at least five years longer is better. When I was younger I worked for the Mellon family. The Mellon's made their fortunes by taking a risk..buying and never selling anything they bought. Third if and when your stock goes up keep moving your stop up and follow it up. Most investors can't determine an exit stratgdy so have some disipline and let the market do it for you untill you deveplope your own criteria which works for you. Most investors stay at the party too long, using eternal optimism or worst tax reasons interfer with their exit decisions. Now if you like take this info apply it AMD and tells us what you think about whether amd is a buy or not. Good trading. and remember AMD is one of the most volitol stock issues on the NYSE. So keep your seatbelt fastened and your malox handy. There are no easy roads to sucess.
