1/29/16 Contest update Clearly, some entity has cast an evil eye on biotech stocks. How else to explain their recent miserable performance relative to the broad market? My bubbe taught me that one can ward off an evil eye by wearing an article of clothing inside out. How about next week that’s what we all do? The dismal numbers: At Friday’s close, the Contest median was down -27.20% YTD (vs. down -22.51% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was down -21.01% YTD (vs. down -14.87% YTD a week ago) and the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was down -28.16% YTD (vs. down -21.03% a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) closed down -7.86% YTD (vs. down -8.31% YTD a week ago). Biotechs are performing so poorly that JBOG’s portfolio, down -13.44% YTD, is the Contest leader. DODGY’s portfolio, down -15.57%, slipped to second place and DOUGH’s portfolio, down -15.96% YTD, moved into third place. At Friday's close, all 58 Contest portfolios remained in the red, with 11 beating the NBI and 31 beating the SPSIBI. The 224 Contest stock picks have an average YTD loss of -23.93% and a median YTD loss of -24.63%. Below is the Top Ten list.
