If the theories about the beginning of the universe are even vaguely correct, its kind of hard to believe that life was there at the beginning. For some time after the big bang you didn't even have atomic nuclei.

For those that believe in a cyclical universe there could have been life before the big bang, but I don't see how it could have survived the collapse and expansion at the end of the "last universe" and the the universe as we know it today. It would have had to have started up again.
