I am not sure how telephones work in less populated areas.
But I suspect two nearby small towns may share one telephone
office. If it is not your town, you are further away. From
one small town location, I can connect 46K by calling my
ISP's 800 number. But I can only connect to the local ISP
at 24K (he has a max 400, K56 compatable). So I cannot
blame the wires in that situation, although the ISP does!
I think the local ISP is not telling the whole story.

Jeff & Scott --- with my GVIL modem, I am getting consistant connects between
46.6 and 50.6. Have yet to break the 50.6 connect, however. The speed
difference between this and the USRX 28.8 I replaced is nevertheless
very dramatic.
