I think just reading what you wrote there, it's obvious Miller and Urey had a target and designed their experiment to get the target.

They wanted to produce complex organic chemicals. Wanting that, and dumping a bunch of gases in a container and sparking them doesn't amount to "design".

BTW, Miller and Urey's ideas about the early atmosphere have, I think, been shown to be offbase.

There's something to that but 1 - "Shown to be" is probably a bit strong. The current theory is different, but nothing is certain here. 2 - Those gasses probably would be around a volcano at the time, even if they were not extremely common in the atmosphere otherwise.
