I keep forgetting: right clicking on the speaker symbol in the system tray gives a few options - including "trouble shoot sound problems"

In fact, right clicking on anything can reveal solutions you never expected for problems you have not had yet :)

RE: Fixing Sound Problems After a Windows 10 Upgrade or Update

Glad you were able to resolve the sound problem by switching your default sound device from Headphones to Speakers.

Couldn't find a video for that, but this video does just the opposite and switches the default sound device from Speakers to Headphones.

However, whether people want Speakers or Headphones, they should make sure this setting has the correct default.

Also, this next video has some other suggestions for people experiencing sound problems after a Windows 10 upgrade or update.

Good Luck to All fixing your Sound Problems!
