Taxol May Fight Alzheimer's Disease

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Laboratory studies of the drug taxol suggest it may someday help in the battle against Alzheimer's disease.

Scientists at the University of Kansas in Lawrence say the drug slowed the damage to brain cells caused by amyloid protein fibers. Animal brain cells not treated with taxol and exposed to the fibers withered and died within 48 hours, according to Dr. Mary L. Michaelis, professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the university.

She notes that in all cases, "the taxol seemed to slow the degeneration of the branching ends of nerve cells," a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. "The cells look good up to seven days after the introduction of ls from damage associated with amyloid proteins. Extensive clusters of these proteins are found in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease.

"We haven't tried this (drug) in animals or in humans," Michaelis stresses. "We don't know how this... would translate into the brain and influence the actual disease process."
