Net exports currently subtracting a whopping 20% of GDP growth though - 0.4%.

Jon, I like this thread but frequently don't understand your abbreviations. That I put down to my lack of familiarity with finance, which I don't want to display. The one abbreviation above is clear, yet I don't follow the sentence for two reasons:

Why do net exports reduce GDP? If the US exports a trillion more widgets than it imports, doesn't that trillion count as GDP?

Why subtract 0.4% from the 20%?
