I don't necessarily agree: Layoffs at Yahoo! means the quality of their site will lag/suffer even more than it already does. They need a layout improvement, first and foremost. Yes, it would be very helpful if whoever manages the page did a better job but it would not be that hard to make simple changes to greatly improve how it looks and what's being "thrown" at the viewer. It's almost like they are doing just that, throwing whatever they can and hoping something sticks. Very poor approach, IMO.
