Jenny Ruhl is a treasure! She was my introduction to the diabetes thing.

My friend got into Furman. I read a fair amount about that on her behalf. Makes a case that is at least superficially plausible. I never "got down into the weeds," as LB would say.

The Barnard types mean well...

I haven't looked that carefully into diabetes but wrt weight matters, they do get results from diametrically opposed diets so I imagine that could be the case, at least short term and/or for folks whose diabetes isn't well advanced. I have scratched my head over this apparent contradiction. A couple of possible explanations I have conjured...

One is that people are just different and respond differently. Another is that people are such a mess when they start treatment that a change in any direction is relative positive so they improve. Another is that the body benefits from abrupt changes in direction regardless of the direction--a reboot if you will. And last, I am reminded of the results of the Edison Electric study where where productivity improvements were tested. Changes were made and productivity improved. Then they changed things back and productivity improved again. Turns out that the productivity improvements resulted from the attention given to the workers, not the process changes. Could be that folks make improvements as a function of engaging in a program and benefit regardless of the contents of the program.

That's just one person's story but it does happen to be mine.

That's the one that counts. I've kept more than a hundred pounds off for 15 years, managed to avoid even prediabetes, and not clogged my arteries. (73rd birthday the other day.) No one will ever be able to persuade that dumping the carbs doesn't work or is unhealthy.

PS and OT: Just watched episode 3 of the new X-Files. Delightful.

If you eat too much sugar and too many carbs, you WILL get diabetes. Period.
