Look how long the first great depression took

There was one great depression, which was much worse then this downturn. There were also other economic downturns that were worse then this one. Not just a few that were worse but dozens if you measure by the size of the economic contraction. The most recent recession wasn't even the worse since the great depression. The short but very sharp post WWII recession had a larger economic contraction (if a much quicker and stronger recovery) , as did the double dip recession in the early 80s (if and only if you add the total from both recessions). The recession in 1958 was almost as bad in terms of the size of the economic contraction.

What's different about those earlier severe recessions is they were not followed by a particularly weak recovery like the most recent one. That isn't a partisan point its just stating fact.
